Avocados

Avocado – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

How many types of avocados have you tried?  While the Hass is the most common, it’s not necessarily the best tasting or best value.  Most standard commercial varieties are referred to as an A or B cultivar.  The A cultivars are mostly slightly less cold-hardy than the B cultivars

A cultivars: Hass, Pinkerton, Reed, Gwen, Choquette, and Lula

B cultivars: Fuerte, Bacon, Ettinger, Zutano, Brogden, Monroe, and Sharwil

I tried the Gwen avocado recently, but didn’t find it to be much different from the Hass.

I prefer the texture and flavor of Hass to Fuerte and Bacon.

Ettinger has a nice flavor and texture, but its very thin skin makes it a pain to peel.  Since my primary use of avocado is as a salad topping, I’ll only buy this variety if the alternatives are sickly looking or a lot more expensive.

Pinkerton and Reed are both nice – especially if you’re making guacamole or otherwise using more avocado since these varieties are on the large size.

Zutano is my favorite (of the ones that I’ve tried).  Its skin is a little hard to peel, but not as difficult as the Ettinger’s.  The texture and taste are light.
