A 2012 August 20 Food Business News article on the benefits of coconut water observes that coconut water has five times the potassium of popular sports drinks and comparable amounts of magnesium and carbohydrates, but only 2/3 the sodium. The conclusion drawn in the article is that coconut water is recommend as a beverage to recover from “light exercise” but not from “heavy exercise” – exercise which causes significant perspiration. Given the amount of sodium that most people consume, I question the need for most people to consume a beverage higher in sodium post-exercise and the need for immediate sodium replenishment. (Immediate potassium replenishment to ease muscle cramps I understand.)
