Meaning of Natural

The US FDA is currently considering a definition for the term “natural”.  GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) and US federal courts have been prodding the FDA for clarity.  On 2016 May 10, the closing date of the FDA’s comment period, the GMA suggested a three-tier system:

  1. All or 100% natural
  2. Natural
  3. Made with natural ingredients

The GMA’s preference is for a definition of natural that has relatively little overlap with the concerns of environmental and social sustainability certifications including organic, non-GMO, and Fair Trade.  They would like a definition that excludes synthetic, artificial, or highly processed ingredients – excepting nutrient additives in compliance with the FDA’s Fortification Policy.
