AVMA approves policy discouraging raw petfood diets. – 2012 September 6 PetfoodIndustry.com
I feel that if the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) were truly concerned over the potential hazards associated with the consumption of raw food by companion animals then they would emphasize keeping animals from unintended prey feeding. For example, cats allowed to catch (i.e. eat) birds and rodents are subject to a range of problems including intestinal parasites and strychnine poisoning.
Just as with meat for human consumption, the supplier’s quality control process and the diet, health, and living conditions of the source animals have a much greater impact on the healthfulness of the meat and environmental impact than does pathogen elimination. I want the source animals to have likewise been fed a species-appropriate diet and not been fed hormones and antibiotics.
